The Tenements for TV3 has been nominated for an IFTA

A brand new four part documentary series by Big Mountain Productions for TV3, with funding from BAI

Dublin harboured some of the worst slums in Europe where grossly overcrowded tenement houses were breeding grounds for hardship, hunger and disease

Presenter Bryan Murray, the son of a tenement dweller, explores what the slums were like when they were at their height 100 years ago

For more than 100 years, Dublin harboured some of the worst slums Europe has ever seen. Grossly   overcrowded tenement houses were breeding grounds of hardship, hunger and disease.  Like many Dubliners, Bryan Murray, the presenter of this brand new TV3 series, is descended from tenement dwellers and in this opening programme he sets out to discover how the tenements
first arose.

Guided by experts like Catriona Crowe, the Senior Archivist at the National Archives of Ireland, and Professor Diarmaid Ferriter of University College Dublin, Bryan explores what the slums were like when they were at their height 100 years ago and traces their origins back to the Act of Union of
1801. He then reveals that some of the worst slum landlords were local Catholic property owners (not Anglo-Irish aristocrats, as is often supposed) and that the living conditions of tenement dwellers remained appalling, right the way up until the middle of the 20th Century.

The series uses the 1911 census and particularly the records from the night of one house No7 Henrietta St to tell the history of those turbulent times, the rise of the slums after the act of union, the social unrest in the early 20th century and why these slums persisted right up to the 1970's.

The Tenements airs Wednesday 3rd August at 9.30pm on TV3

The Winston family outside no. 7 Henrietta Street

A Brief Introduction to Henrietta Street, and No. 7 in particular

Big Mountain/TV3's ‘The Tenements’ was substantially filmed at No7 Henrietta St. The Winston family who have a direct link to the house spent three days and two nights in No 7 in the room where they once lived. The production team with the help and assistance of the present building owners picked this house to recreate the conditions of 1911.
